A few days ago, I came across a social media marketing agency who called themselves "gurus" in online marketing. When I took a look at one of their clients' Facebook page, I noticed they had been using a profile page rather than a fan page. This is not only against the Facebook statement of rights and responsibilities, but it's also very ineffective when it comes to Marketing Agency online marketing. As a result, I designed this test to help you determine if the agency you've hired actually knows what they're doing. Simply check off the questions that apply to your digital agency and find out how they score at the end.

Does your agency provide you with monthly analytic reports?

Does your agency have their own Facebook fan page?

Does your agency post content on their Facebook page at least 4 times a week?

Does your agency have their own Twitter page?

Does your agency post content on their Twitter page at least 4 times a week?

Does your agency have a blog?

Does your agency post at least 3 blogs per week?

Does your agency have other clients in your industry?

When you call your agency, does a human being answer? (Not an answering machine)

Does your agency contact YOU at least once per month?

Is "social media" listed as a capability on their website? (Doesn't count if it's not on the list)

Has your agency provided you with examples or case studies of previous work?

Does your agency inform you of important social media news?, i.e. new Facebook regulations or new social media platform?

Does your agency monitor the online conversation regarding your business?

Does your agency offer social media training for you and your company?

Does your agency get your target audience engaged in dialogue online?

Does your agency evaluate negative comments/post before dealing with them online? (Do NOT check if they automatically delete negative comments)

Has your agency ever suggested using YouTube to promote your business?

Has your agency ever suggested running a PPC (Pay Per Click) ad for you?

Are your physical promotions in sync with your online promotions?

18-20 - "A" - Your agency knows how to use effective online marketing strategies to promote your business. Keep them around, these are hard to find.

15-17 - "B" - Your agency is a little rough around the edges, but can still promote your business and communicate with your target audience online.

12-14 - "C" - There is a difference between a marketing agency and an online marketing agency. Just because your agency may be good at marketing your business physically, doesn't mean they know how to effectively market it online. You may want to consider hiring an agency that understands effective online marketing strategies.

11 and under - "F" - Your agency lacks a solid understanding of how to promote your business online. You may want to think about hiring someone who understands how to use digital marketing or social media in a more effective way.

Remember, how your agency represents Marketing Agency themselves is directly related to how they'll represent you. If they aren't using social media (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr) effectively to leverage their own business, what makes you think they'll use it effectively to promote yours? If your agency did not fair well on this test, they may lack an understanding of how to use online marketing effectively, which should raise a red flag for you.
